@purevpn began as an experiment in an office in Hong Kong in 2006 and since then it has been refined to give users one of the most popular virtual private network solutions. This was achieved through a superior customer experience combined with excellent security and speed. Whether you want to surf the internet in complete privacy or share sensitive information securely, Pure VPN makes it possible.

We subscribed and downloaded the software to find out if it’s worth your time.

Features

PureVPN is still headquartered in Hong Kong and offers users over 500 servers in 141 countries including North, Central and South America, Europe, Asia, Africa and Oceania. With so many servers available at their disposal, the network achieves incredible stability, speed, and security.

You can connect up to five devices simultaneously and no matter which plan you have selected, you will have access to all of the features offered by PureVPN including an internet kill switch, unlimited server switching, and unlimited data transfer. This impressive package of features has gained the company over one million users.

Using the Service

Installing PureVPN is similar to any other installation you might run on your device. A setup wizard guides you through the process, and the program installs in under one minute.

Upon opening the application you will be prompted for your username and password. Once entered, the client will initiate and provide you with five action choices including Stream, Internet Freedom, Security/Privacy, File-Sharing, and Remote/Dedi IP. There is also an instruction manual.

After selecting what you would like to use the platform for, simply choose your encryption level and location. Once selected, you are free to enjoy the internet.

Privacy

Hong Kong has no mandatory data retention laws but users should be aware that PureVPN does keep session logs. This allows them to monitor the amount of bandwidth used, attempts made to access their servers, and how many users click on their software. While this is not ideal, no VPN can promise complete anonymity online and this information allows PureVPN to protect the network from hackers, so consider it a small price to pay for enhanced security.

Security

The company uses a number of protocols to protect your data. OpenVPN is probably the best option as it includes 256-bit AES data encryption and SHA-1 data authentication. But other protocols are also supported including PPTP, L2TP/IPSec, PPTP, SSTP, and IKEv2. You’ll also be able to take advantage of other features such as multiple logins and the internet kill switch to boost your security online.

Speed and Performance

PureVPN Speed and performanceWith so many VPN’s claiming to be the fastest on the market, it’s probably a good idea to lower your expectations. Added encryption will always affect your speed and while PureVPN’s servers are not the slowest, they certainly don’t live up to the hype. One area in which it performs particularly poorly is with VPN upload speeds. This could be put down to an overloaded server, but that is disappointing news for users who do a lot of video streaming.

Customer Support

Between setup guides, a FAQ page, and the ability to search the company’s vast knowledge database, you will have no trouble getting started and troubleshooting most problems you may encounter. If you need more assistance, you can send an email, open a support ticket or Live Chat with an agent. Support is available around the clock, but for more in-depth answers it is better to email the support team and wait for a response.

Pricing Plans

Pricing and Plans pureVPN

PureVPN offers a unique pricing model based on how users intend to use the software. There are plans for downloaders, streamers, and premium users, each with a monthly or annual subscription option. You can pay for your subscription with a variety of payment options including credit card, Bitpay, Cashu, and even with a Walmart gift card. You will not be able to try before you buy, but you can get a refund within 30 days if you are not satisfied with the service – no questions asked.

Summary

PureVPN has been around for over a decade consistently expanding and improving the reach of its product. It may not be the best VPN provider on the market, but it is an excellent choice nonetheless. They offer a reliable service with solid customer support.
